Dr Liang Chen is currently a research associate at the Centre for Migration & Ethnic Studies and the Centre for African Studies at Sun Yat-sen University in China. He obtained his degree in Anthropology at the Australian National University in 2016, with his doctoral thesis examining the life strategies of petit bourgeois businessmen in urbanizing China. Since 2016, he has been researching the trans-continental business network of African expatriates in China, examining the interaction of religion, business, and mobility. His second project explores the settling of pastoralists and social change in the Afar region of Ethiopia and Djibouti; while the third is concerned with the urbanisation of Addis Ababa: its rapid urban renewal, and the establishment of industrial parks and emerging labour relations.
He speaks fluent Chinese and English, as well as basic Amharic.
